Only the top 30 players on the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup standings qualified to play in Atlanta this week, Rory McIlroy who was 5th in the FedEx Cup standings starting this week, recently questioned the legacy of the Tour Championship, and stated that he has a problem with the grand prize and the rating system.
McIlroy thinks that the current system which allows players to start on different scores is not fair. He says that, “You can shoot the best score of the week and not win the golf tournament.” According to McIlroy, “it is normal to get an advantage if you have played better throughout the year, but this is still not the best way to do this.”
His second critique was about the grand prize of the Championship, 15 million dollars. McIlroy thinks that playing the tournament should not be solely about winning money: The satisfaction of winning the event is a great reward. He says that “…having $15m front and center isn’t probably the best way to do it. I don’t think the money needs to be front and center because I don’t think that’s what the fans care about.”
