Paul Casey wins the Porsche European Open event, earning his first European Tour title for 5 years. Starting the day one shot behind Robert MacIntyre and Bernd Ritthammer, Casey achieved a four-way tie at the top with three holes to go. He managed to birdie the two of last three holes to clinch the event by 1 from Bob MacIntyre. Casey said “I’m emotional in every victory, but this time it was very different. In fact, this trophy is so prestigious, I am over the moon. I am very happy to be the Porsche European Open winner.”
This is the first victory for Casey since 2014 KLM Open. He dedicated this trophy to Gordon Brand Jr, a former champion of the same event. Gordon Brand is a personal hero of Casey; whose funeral is on September 9 having sadly passed away nearly a month ago now. Casey stated that “Among the legends who won this trophy, I would like to highlight one. Gordon Brand Jr, rest in peace.” Two players also broke the course record this week, Bernd Wiesberger and Romain Wattel, with 8-under 64s. Wiesberger finished solo-fifth at 12 under, and his playing partner, Wattel, was only one shot back in 6th.
